Postlude Music

Today's Postlude by Don F. Hermanson, "God of Grace and God of Glory" was written by Harry Emerson Fosdick (1878-1969) for the 1931 dedication of the Riverside Church in the Morningside area of upper Manhattan. He served as pastor from 1931 until his retirement in 1946. Fosdick remained active as a preacher, author and radio personality during retirement. He was certainly one of the most imminent clergy of the twentieth century. "God of Grace and God of Glory" was first published in 1932 and has enjoyed increasing popularity to the present.

Today's Postlude is "On What Has Now Been Sown" (DARWELL's 148th). The original use of this tune was used to praise Psalm 148, written by John Darwall (1731-1789). The text of this beloved hymn was written by John Newton (author of "Amazing Grace") and is actually a compilation of two separate hymns. The first Stanza is the sixth and final stanza from Newton’s “What Contradictions Meet,” published in 1779 (#26), and the final two stanzas are taken from Newton’s “To Thee Our Wants Are Known,” published in 1873

"Give To Our God Immortal Praise!" (DUKE STREET) - This hymn was written by Isaac Watts and is based upon Psalm 136:1 "For His mercy endureth forever."
